Joint Mobilization

Joint mobilization is a manual technique where a therapist applies controlled, graded pressure to a joint to restore movement that's become restricted.

Joint mobilization is one of the manual therapy tools we use, and like every treatment here, it's chosen after testing shows exactly which joint is restricted and by how much, not applied as a general loosening technique.

What It Is

Joint mobilization involves a therapist's hands applying slow, controlled movement directly to a joint, gliding or oscillating it within and sometimes slightly beyond its current available range. This is different from a single high-velocity adjustment. It's a sustained, graded pressure applied in stages, with the therapist feeling for the point of restriction and working the joint through it.

The goal is to restore normal joint mechanics, the small gliding and rolling motions between joint surfaces that have to happen correctly for a joint to move without pain. When those small motions are lost, whether from injury, surgery, or simply disuse, the joint compensates in ways that create pain elsewhere in the chain. Mobilization is graded on a scale from gentle oscillations aimed at reducing pain to firmer, sustained pressure aimed at increasing range of motion, and the grade used depends on what the evaluation found and how the joint responds during treatment.

What to Expect

You'll feel pressure and movement directly at the joint, and some mild discomfort is common, particularly if the joint has been restricted for a long time. It shouldn't be sharp or lasting. We tell you what the sensation will feel like before we start and adjust pressure based on how you respond during the session.

What We Use It For

Joint mobilization is used for shoulder stiffness and impingement, knee and hip restriction following injury or surgery, spinal joint restriction contributing to back pain, and ankle stiffness that's limiting normal movement.

How It Fits Into Your Plan of Care

Joint mobilization is chosen the same way every treatment here is chosen, based on what your evaluation finds.

It's paired with other manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and a home program aimed at the specific activity you're working to get back to, and it's adjusted as your numbers change.
